Ready or not, here comes junior year.

Today was the first real day of junior year.  My parents and I drove down Sunday morning and they helped me move in.  After catching up with some friends for a couple days, the first day of classes arrived.

This semester I'm taking two pretty hard chem classes, so I'm anxious to see how I fare with it all.  Sad life of a hard science major: I have 12 hours of lecture and probably 16 hours of lab a week.  And that only counts for 15 credit hours this semester.  Ahhh.

I know it's a failed picture, but I feel like it would've been cool if I had positioned the camera correctly.  Oh well.

Earring display that I made a few weeks ago!  I bought the frame from Goodwill and had some lace saved for DIY projects.  :)

Hello, my name is Kathy...

...and I have a slight problem.  Well, I have many, but one in particular is starting to rear its ugly head.

I like to keep busy.  Free time is just another opportunity for me to add something else to my schedule.  And junior year (the most difficult year I will have in college) is no different.

I've written about this before, but I'll say it again, I love guard.  Marching band, winterguard, drum corps.  I just fell in love with it in high school and still am.  Long story short, I'm trying to make colorguard a fixture at The College once again, forming a guard that will perform with the pep band throughout the year.  It's just a seed of an idea, but I'm already getting anxious at the thought of performing again, with a guard and a choreographed routine.

It was probably a mix of my brother having his high school band camp right now, the Drum Corps International showing in theatres a few weeks back, and one of my high school guard girls posting a picture after her first day at her university's band camp, but hopefully this can turn into something real.

I'm trying not to think about uniforms, if The College has enough equipment, tape, practice space, teaching basics and choreography, and everything that comes with getting a guard show together.  *sigh*  Baby steps.

Wish me luck!

"Every day I feel this pain"

I took an evening stroll with one of my closest and oldest friends last night in DC.  I will be the first to admit that while I've lived close to the nation's capitol my entire life, I'm not as familiar with the area as I'd like to be.

We stopped by Good Stuff Eatery for burgers and shakes, then did a bit of Metro hopping.  I really love the row houses and small shops that line the streets of DC.  The atmosphere is really ideal for just hanging out after work or on the weekends.  The weather wasn't optimal for pictures, and I still haven't mastered how to do the whole evening photography thing, so I don't have much to show you.

St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church.  Miguel, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.  I'll try to visit on my next trip into DC.  :)

Dubstep's never really been my thing, but I can't hate a good Ellie Goulding dubstep remix.

"al amenecer"

Yesterday was the first time in a while that my entire family spent real time together.  My father goes fishing every chance he can and seeing as I'm home, I suggested that the entire family go fishing together.  I really just wanted to make my family take a break from their daily routines and relax with each other.

Our 'fishing hole' is at Kent Narrows, MD.  We've been going there for years and it's always a successful trip.

How the morning began:

But soon enough, everyone was up and ready.

My father, with a couple crab he swept up.

We were packing up when I realized that the crab net was weighted pretty nicely for a couple peggy spins and simple tosses.

Total haul: about 20 crab and 50 or so white and yellow perch.  Recently, we've been giving away the majority of our catch to friends and family.  There's only so much fish we can eat.

Day well spent?  I think yes.

And if you're wondering, I did do more than take pictures and do guard with a fishing net.  A good chunk of those fish were caught by me.

Pipe Dreams

With only three weeks until the new school year starts, I'm anxious and extremely nervous.  I have a semi ridiculous school schedule, with Chem classes and a lot of labs.  Fingers crossed that I keep my sanity through everything.

My friend introduced me to this great little coffee shop in New Town a few weeks ago, and I fell in love with it immediately.  It's called Harbour Coffee and I love the industrial, but cozy feel.  It reminds me of the dream I've always had of opening a coffee shop/used bookstore.

[Edit] These aren't pictures from the actual coffee shop, but they accurately depict the atmosphere, I feel.

August Inspiration

Is it really already the first day of August?  By the end of the month, I'll be starting the second half of college.  That is crazy and still hard for me to believe.

But in the meantime, here's what August makes me think of.  Enjoy!
